Portugal Celebrates #IWSD

The Infante de Montemor Swimming Club, located in Montemor-o-Velho, Coimbra, Portugal is a swimming education club. We celebrate International Water Safety Day with an activity called Support Techniques, directed at our competition athletes from pre-competition and cadet grades and from their parents. The activity lasted about two hours, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. We approach ground-based water rescue techniques through the methods of talking, reaching, launching and techniques in water with various support materials (balls, ropes, noodle, plank). We also use real means of rescue used by professional swimmers in Portugal (torpedo buoy and rescue belt). Athletes and parents were able to understand what drowning was, and performed rescue techniques for drowning victims.  Although they all know how to swim very well, given that they are athletes, as a club responsible for teaching swimming, we are aware that this is not enough.  We are approaching summer and we know that our athletes will go to the beach, rivers, lakes. Because they know how to swim, their willingness to be in the water increases, thus increasing the risk of being put at risk. Certainly knowing how to swim is important to lessen drowning, we know that it is not enough. So to wake them up for risk issues and teach them techniques that may be helpful in case of difficulty is important to us. We are grateful for your cooperation. Together we will make a difference. -Vlademar...
